Czech Showcase at Fringe Festival in Edinburgh
Czech contemporary dance and motion theatre will have strong representatives at this year’s annual 70th Fringe Festival. Five top-class Czech companies are going to perform from 4th to 28th August in the ZOO theatre in Edinburgh.
It is the first time for 420PEOPLE to perform at Fringe with Václav Kuneš’s Wind-up referring to time passing by. Cirk la Putyka is going to stage a brand new production of Batacchio directed by Maksim Komarov, which pays homage to itinerant comedians. DOT504, which has performed and succeeded at Fringe before, is going to present their new piece in the repertoire. In 2008, the year of the “Czech season”, their performance Holdin’ Fast was nominated for the Total Theatre Award. One year later, DOT504 received the Herald Angel Award for 100 Wounded Tears. They bring their choreography You Are Not the One Who Shall Live Long to Scotland this year. The authors are Jozef Fruček – Linda Kapetanea, who also produced all the previous successful performances. Another item in Czech presentation is choreography Gossip by Lenka Vagnerová, whose La Loba was nominated for the Total Theatre Award at Fringe in 2014. Spitfire Company is going to travel to Edinburgh again and stage two productions: One Step before the Fall (the company staged it at Fringe in 2013 and received the Herald Angel Award and the nomination for the Total Theatre Award) and the most recent solo The Storyteller by performer Cécile da Costa.
Fringe is the biggest and oldest theatre festival in the world. It is well-attended by media, theatre managers, festival programmers, therefore it is a great opportunity to establish international contacts and export support. Presentation of selected Czech companies in Edinburgh is organized by the Czech Centre in London in cooperation with the Arts and Theatre Institute and other Czech and British partners with the support by the Ministry of Culture of the Czech Republic.
